The Beginning of Female Editors

$10.00

By Aviva Davis

This zine profiles four early female film editors, discusses the role of women in editing early films (1910s-1950s), and reflects on gender and the future of film editing.

From the introduction:

“During the silent film era , from 1916 to 1923, ‘women were more powerful in cinema than any other American business-to the point that more women than men owned independent production companies in 1923’ (Shambu). The film industry grew over time to be more male dominated, but editing was one practice that women tried to hold onto.

“Many (female) film cutters never got their film credit for various reasons, and because of this, they are erased from film history.”
